Kaleidoscope World

"Kaleidoscope World" is rap song by Filipino rapper Francis M. from the album Freeman that was released in 1995. In the unrehearsed introduction of this hit from the Master Rapper, he sucked a helium-filled balloon and offered some of it to his daughter Maxene Magalona. Paying homage to The Beatles 1966 song "Here, There & Everywhere", this hit features three distinct guitarists - Perf De Castro of Rivermaya, Olrac and Noel Mendez and, in 1995, won an Awit award for "Best Produced Record" of the year. The song tackles on diversity amongst people, which have different social status, physical features, opinions, preferences etc. It compares those differences to a toy called kaleidoscope that even if there are different colors and hues, it still a “beautiful view”, implying that we should respect each other differences and freedoms. In 2004, Francis M collaborated with Pinoy Rock group Parokya ni Edgar in the live album Inuman Sessions Vol. 1 ., and rappe...

Esem

"Esem" is a mid-1990s hit from Filipino rock group Yano, which is included on their eponymous album. The song is a reference to SM City North Edsa, the very first super mall established by SM Prime Holdings, in Quezon City, Philippines. This mall is one of the favorite tambayan (hangout) of some University of the Philippines students, which members of Yano (Dong Abay and Eric Gancio) belong. In this song, they recount their experiences while loitering inside the mall without any money to buy things except for transportation fare and two cigarettes. It shows the true iskolar ng bayan (scholars of the nation), who strive hard to study with their little allowances.

Harana

"Harana" (Tagalog for "Seranade") is one of Parokya ni Edgar's biggest hit. In 1999, this song got an award from MTV Video Music Awards in the "Southeast Asia Viewer's Choice Awards" category. It seems that there is some kind of irony (or humor) in this song because their doing the harana (serenade) in formal barong (a traditional Filipino garment) with the informal maong (jeans). This song was originally written by Filipino singer Tony Lambino and ended up to this Filipino alternative rock band. In 2002, Parokya ni Edgar made a full version of this song with the following addition: Uso pa ba ang harana? Good evening, puwede ba hong mangharana?

Balita

"Balita" (Tagalog for "News") is a song by Filipino Folk Rock group Asin. The song was written during the regime of Former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos and it has a strong political message against the repression and violence during the Marcos era. The whole song is written in Tagalog except for the last verse, which is in Visayan. This song serves as sample in Black Eyed Peas' "The Apl Song", which included in their album Elephunk . Apl.de.ap of the Black Eyed Peas has Filipino roots and fond of listening to Asin when he was in the Philippines during his childhood. Pendong Aban, one of the members of Asin, felt proud for the inclusion of "Balita" in Black Eyed Peas' album and the influence of Asin to Apl.de.ap's music. Dust in the Wind

"Dust in the Wind" is a song by American progressive rock band Kansas. It is probably their most famous hit. The song's message reflects how life is so short and we are just a speck in the whole universe, thus, like dust in the wind. In 1999, Sarah Brightman covered the song in her album Eden . Dust in the Wind I close my eyes Only for a moment, then the moment's gone All my dreams Pass before my eyes, a curiosity Dust in the wind All they are is dust in the wind Same old song Just a drop of water in an endless sea All we do Crumbles to the ground, though we refuse to see Dust in the wind All we are is dust in the wind, ohh Now, don't hang on Nothing lasts forever but the earth and sky It slips away And all your money won't another minute buy Dust in the wind All we are is dust in the wind All we are is dust in the wind Dust in the wind Everything is dust in the wind Everything is dust in the wind The wind

Iris

"Iris" is a song originally written by Goo Goo Dolls front man, Johnny Rzeznik, as a soundtrack for the 1998 US film City of Angels , which stars Nicolas Cage and Meg Ryan. This song is also included in Goo Goo Dolls sixth album, Dizzy Up Girl . It is arguably the most popular hit from this American alternative rock band that brought them to the mainstream audience. "Iris" has spent many weeks on various music charts all over the world including Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay charts, which spent a record-breaking 18 weeks in the number 1 spot. The title of the song describes how Seth (character of Nicolas Cage in the movie) see himself, Maggie (character of Meg Ryan), and everyone else. Basically, the song theme is about finding the one true love of a person that no one can see and understand. When he finds his true love, he will let her know that he exists and she will be only person in the whole world to understand him, thus the meaning of the last line of the so...

Tatsulok

“ Tatsulok ” is a song of Filipino folk-rock band Buklod from their second album with the same name. The song tells about a boy named Totoy, who was a casualty of the Total War policy of then Philippine President Corazon Aquino during the late 1980s. Although the song refers to a real situation in the Philippines during that time (i.e. the effect US militarization), the boy is probably fictionalized to emphasize a point and to give hope to society’s inequality. The song opines that the battle is not between the reds (New People’s Army) and yellows (the Aquino government) and the true battle is combating the “ Tatsulok ”. “ Tatsulok ”, Tagalog word for Triangle, refers to the social structure in the Philippines where the elite is at the top and impoverish at the bottom, which, according to the song, the source of injustice and poverty. The song encourages Totoy to end the battle against poverty by inverting the triangle and place those poor people at the top. Filipino rock group Bam...

Maling Akala

" Maling Akala " comes from first commercially-released album, Ultraelectromagneticpop , of the now defunct 1990s "chopsuey" band The Eraserheads. In 2005, this was later revived by the reggae group Brownman Revival, which triggered renewed interest to The Eraserheads and prompted Sony BMG to release a tribute album to the band entitled Ultraelectromagneticjam . Brownman Revival's version is parodied by Joey de Leon's album Joey to the World 2 under the title " Maliit na Syota ".

Narda

According to an interview of the Filipino rock band Kamikazee, "Narda" talks about things or their aspirations that are impossible to fulfill and they did not composed it for the TV series Darna , although most of the song refers to the Darna mythos. The 5th verse seems to be a mistake or humor by Kamikazee because Ding is Narda's brother and not her love interest.

214

"214" is a song from the eponymous album of Rivermaya, a Filipino alternative rock band, where the former member of the band, Bamboo, was the lead vocalist. "214" derives from the first 3 words of the song "Am I Real" , which symbolizes the number of characters of those words (i.e. 2=Am, 1=I, 4=Real). Luke Mijares, former South Border lead vocalist, made a cover version of this song. 214 Am I real? Do the words I speak before you make you feel, that the love I lay for you will see no ending? Well if you look into my eyes then you should know, that there is nothing here to doubt, nothing to fear, and you can lay your questions down ‘cause if you’ll hold me we can fade into the night and you’ll know The world could die, and everything may lie, Still you shouldn't cry ‘Cause time may pass, but longer than it’ll last I’ll be by your side Take my hand, and gently close your eyes so you could understand that there’s no greater love tonight than what I’ve for...

Hold On

"Hold On" is a song by Filipino 1990s rock group Neocolours. In 2007, it was used by GMA Network in the Philippines as a theme song for the Korean drama Jumong , which sung by Shamrock, another rock group. Hold On Hey, baby, how's life been movin' on? I can't deny it, now you are gone This is the first time Can I make it through? Without you now, do the things I used to do It's getting harder to ease the pain The feeling changes, love still remains I don't know how if I can get this right Maybe given time I'll make the most of what I've got Is this the price we pay With all the good times we shared Faithfully, we've got a reason to go on I know it's good to be true Just spend the nights with you Let me tell you that our love can make it through Hold on, baby hold on We've got to go on now This feeling so strong Hold on, baby hold on It's a burning desire Comin' right down the wire Sweet talking it's all in the line There...

Bizarre Love Triangle

The 1980's British band New Order was the first to record this song on their album Brotherhood and regarded as one of their best singles. Other versions of this song were covered by various artists including Frente! in the 1990s and in 2005 by The Speaks, a Filipino-American Washington-based band. Bizarre Love Triangle Every time i think of you I feel a shot right through with a bolt of blue It's no problem of mine but it's a problem I find Living a life that I can't leave behind There's no sense in telling me The wisdom of a fool won't set you free But that's the way that it goes And it's what nobody knows While every day my confusion grows I feel fine and I feel good I'm feeling like I never should Whenever I get this way, I just don't know what to say Why can't we be ourselves like we were yesterday I'm not sure what this could mean I don't think you're what you seem I do admit to myself That if I hurt someone else Then I...
