(They Long to Be) Close to You

"(They Long to Be) Close to You" is a song originally written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. In 1963, Richard Chamberlain was the first artist who released the song as a single but "Blue Guitar", the single's flip side, was the hit song. Dionne Warwick made her version in 1965 but it was "Here I Am", the other side of the single that became a hit.

The Carpenters released this song on their second album Close to You in 1970. It hit number one for four weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, making their breakthrough song. It also became a hit when Jerry Butler and Brenda Lee Eager recorded it on 1972. Other minor hit versions were done by B.T. Express and Gwen Guthrie.

Several covers have been recorded by various artists, such as The Cranberries and Barenaked Ladies.

(They Long to Be) Close to You

Why do birds suddenly appear
Every time you are near?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you.

Why do stars fall down from the sky
Every time you walk by?
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you.

On the day that you were born
The angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue.

That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around.
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you.

On the day that you were born
The angels got together
And decided to create a dream come true
So they sprinkled moon dust in your hair of gold
And starlight in your eyes of blue.

That is why all the girls in town
Follow you all around.
Just like me, they long to be
Close to you.
Just like me (Just like me)
They long to be
Close to you.
